JEMEZ SPRINGS — Soon, visitors to the Village of Jemez Springs will have the opportunity to quench their thirst in the same building firefighters used to keep equipment to quench a fire.
The Second Alarm Brewhouse, on the east side of the Village of Jemez Springs’ Town Hall, is so close to NM 4 that you can touch the cars from the parking lot as they pass by.
What makes this new brewery and restaurant so unique is the history of the building where it will reside.
In the early 1960s, the building was a fire station with several bays full of fire equipment. In the late 1970s or early ’80s, the building was transformed into an American Legion hall. Now the new owners, Jess Lewis, his nephew Cody Lewis and their friend and brew master Daniel Garcia are transforming the building into a fire station-themed brewery.
“You can see the archways were the garage bays once were,” Garcia points out during a tour of the facility. “We plan on knocking out those walls to create an open patio area where the garage doors used to be.”
Still in the middle of major renovations, Garcia said he is excited to see the brewery open to the public in an estimated 30 days.
“This place had been abandoned for several months after the American Legion left it,” Garcia said. “The city council asked if anyone was interested in doing something with it and we said we would like to make a brewery out of it.
This nearly-2,600-square-foot facility already has a custom bar in the center and a kitchen that will serve food from various vendors, depending on the season.
Behind the bar is huge walk-in refrigerator that will be transformed into a tap wall equipped with fire truck gauges.
Garcia said along with offering several of his own unique brews, Second Alarm will have four local beers on tap.
“Our plan is to have 15 taps,” he said. “I will also be brewing on-tap specials for the month.”
Garcia said the list of beers people have loved in the past include his piñon porter, blonde ale and mango wheat.
“We are also joining with Monica’s Snack Shack, which will be Monica’s Firehouse Grill,” he said. “She will offer New Mexican cuisine as well as bar food, burgers, sandwiches, and we also want to be able to provide stuff for the kids, too, like chicken nuggets, mac and cheese, stuff like that.”
Garcia also pointed out that visitors to the brewery can fish in the creek on the west side of the parking lot.
“We knew we had a good location when we talked about opening this business here,” he said. “It’s beautiful, it’s accessible and we look forward to serving the people that come through here to enjoy the outdoors.”
